Kegon-ji Temple (Kyoto City) (華厳寺 (京都市))
Kegon-ji Temple is a temple belonging to the Rinzai Sect located in Nishigyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. The principal image is Dainichi Nyorai. Its formal name is Kegon-ji Temple but is commonly known as Suzumushi-dera Temple after the bell crickets (suzumushi) that are reared all year round.
The temple is renowned for its garden with numerous varieties of bamboo, a Kofuku Jizo (happiness Jozo deity) wearing straw sandals that is said will grant only one wish, the hospitality of tea and cakes provided to visitors by the monks as well as suzumushi (bell cricket) sermons, and is an example of a Kyoto temple that has been successful in working to actively attract visitors.
